Madelin Sintiris

Festival Orchestra ‘25

Flutist Madelin Sintiris graduated this May with a Master’s of Music degree in Flute Performance at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She earned her Bachelor’s of Music in Flute Performance from the University of Maine, where she showcased her versatility in various ensembles, including symphonic band, orchestra, pit orchestra, woodwind quartet, marching band, pep band, and flute ensemble.

Throughout her musical journey, Madelin has been under the mentorship of flutists Lyndsay Boysen, Elizabeth Downing at the University of Maine, and currently, Dr. Cobus du Toit at the University of Massachusetts. Last June, she participated in the Rocky Ridge Music Festival in Estes Park, Colorado, where she learned from Dr. Claudia Anderson, Grinnell College’s flute professor.

This June, Madelin performed on flute, piccolo, and alto flute in the pit orchestra for A Man of No Importance with The Players’ Ring Theater Company. The production’s stylistically nuanced score required precision, adaptability, and close collaboration with the music director and ensemble. Throughout the fast-paced rehearsal and performance process, she demonstrated strong sight-reading skills and responsiveness to live stage cues.

In her Master's of Music program at The University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Madelin is principal flute in the school’s top ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and is a member of the Flute Ensemble. In November 2023, the Flute Ensemble at the University of Massachusetts premiered "This!" by Amanda Harberg at the Flute Center of New York.

Last April, Madelin performed with the UMass Flute Ensemble at the International Low Flutes Festival in Washington D.C. In May 2024, Madelin and the UMass Wind Ensemble went to Ecuador to perform at multiple venues in and around Quito. The Wind Ensemble played alongside the professional band, La Banda Synfonica Metropolitana, at La Casa de Musica, the home of La Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional del Ecuador. While in Quito, she also had the opportunity to teach middle school students during a flute masterclass led by the UMass flute graduate students.

While actively engaged in ensemble and academic pursuits, Madelin teaches as a graduate assistant, instructing the Lively Arts class designed for non-music undergraduate students. This unique class emphasizes the importance of music and art, offering students various avenues for self-expression and a deeper understanding of creativity. Last summer, Madelin was the flute instructor at the Southern Maine Music Academy at the University of Southern Maine. She worked closely with high school students, providing personalized instruction and guidance. Her teaching covered a range of topics, including both solo flute pieces, flute ensemble pieces, and band repertoire, helping students refine their technical skills, interpretative abilities, and overall musicianship. This summer, Madelin will return as the flute instructor for the high school and middle school camp.

At the University of Maine, Madelin was selected to be one of three Drum Majors for the 2022 Pride of Maine Black Bear Marching Band season. Before becoming Drum Major she played sousaphone in the Pride of Maine Black Bear Marching Band and Screamin’ Black Bears Pep Band. While pursuing college marching band, Madelin has marched with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
